Has Ryan Reynolds been cast as Connor Macloud?
There has been talk of a Highlander reboot for nearly a decade now, the original was the best of the five movies, with a TV series and animated version Highlander was a franchise trading on the success of just one good film.
Ryan Reynolds is said to be producers top choice to play Connor Macloud in the now fast tracked remake. French actor Christopher Lambert played Macloud first time round (and 3 sequels), and lets face it Lambert’s attempts at a Scottish accent was about as successful as his co-star Sean Connery’s attempt at a Spanish one.
Highlander told the story of immortals locked in an ageless battle to the death, until only one remains and they shall posses the prize. The sequel was a load of bobbins (even the director’s cut that removed any mention that they were aliens), Highlander 3 was an improvement but still a mess. Highlander Endgame introduced Duncan Macloud (Adrian Paul star of the Highlander TV series) and brought a conclusion to Connor’s story.
2007 saw a DTV sequel released; Highlander The Source starred Adrian Paul, and effectively killed the franchise off by being the worst entry yet. Although, considering “there can be only one”, they sure have milked the concept for all it’s worth.
I welcome news of a remake and Reynolds may not be the obvious choice, but stranger casting choices have been made. No director or start date is confirmed. This could be another risky move from Reynolds, 2011 wasn’t kind to him with back-to-back flops The Change Up and Green Lantern. He found some success with Safe House, and next year’s R.I.P.D looks like a hoot and a half.
Even with these successes, his bid for summer superhero movie was one of the biggest flops in recent memory. Only Disney’s Mars Needs Moms and John Carter lost more money than the Green Lantern. So here’s hoping Disney avoid any other Mars based projects for a while.
