Everyone’s favourite murderous demonic doll is getting a belated sixth installment. Curse of Chucky will see Brad Dourif return to voice killer doll Chucky, and it’s once again written and directed by franchise creator Don Mancini.
Bride of Chucky and its 2004 sequel Seed of Chucky took the series into comedy territory, this worked well once but by the end of Seed we all wondered were it all went wrong. This new film will see a return to straight up horror and move away from the comedy, after all it is a movie about the soul of a serial killer possessing a doll who goes on a killing spree.
Next year will mark the 25th anniversary of Child’s Play, and earlier this year talks of a remake surfaced again. Brad Dourif had commented in an interview that Universal planned a sequel to the existing franchise and a remake. So consider this the studio testing the water, by the time Curse of Chucky hits retailers it would have been 9 years since the last entry. What better way to revive a cult film franchise than knocking out a low budget sequel to remind movie-goers that there’s still life in the concept yet.
However, fans wanting to see the flame haired psycho killer back on the big screen will have to wait it out until the remake, as Curse of Chucky is going straight to DVD next year.
Filming starts in September and a Halloween 2013 DVD release is likely.
