Trailer Trash: Killer Joe + Magic Mike
Although a movie called Killer Joe and Magic Mike sounds like a heart warming tale of brotherhood between a serial killer and a magician, these are 2 separate films that both feature Matthew McConaughey.
The first is William Friedkin’s Killer Joe, based on the play by Tracy Letts (who also writes the screenplay) a young man seeks the wipe out is debt problems with local gangsters by taking out a hit on his evil mother. This leads him to find Joe, the best in the business who also happens to be a cop.
Anybody who has seen Frailty (directed by Bill Paxton) knows that McConaughey can do charismatic psycho killer with ease. He’s been stuck in the land of awful rom-coms for some time, but after The Lincoln Lawyer, a great guest role in Eastbound and Down and forthcoming TV series True Detectives he seems to be taking his career seriously in his middle age years.
Further evidence of this is his appearance as male stripper Dallas in Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike. This is the prolific director’s third film in the last 12 months, Contagion and Haywire were both solid genre movies but Magic Mike is one of those smaller projects he does so well. Ladies will be happy as Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello and McConaughey spend most of the movie with their shirts off.
Killer Joe is out on June 29th and Magic Mike is released on July 11th
