Prometheus Opens on $50m in the US

The US opening weekend for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus was a solid $50m, going up against family friendly sequel Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted was always going to be tough so sadly no number one spot for the sort of (but really not, or is it?) prequel to Alien.

For an ‘R’ rated movie that’s marketed as an original film, this respectable if not spectacular opening confirms there is a place for high brow summer blockbusters. The real test will be how Prometheus holds up in the coming weeks, but as its already made a worldwide total of $141m a final haul of around $350-400m is in sight but not assured.

Madagascar 3 claimed the top spot with just over $60m, Snow White and the Huntsman added  $23m for a running US total of $98.5m and The Avengers added another $10m to its money pile.
