MIB Knocks The Avengers Off The Top Spot

The Men in Black came out of retirement to dethrone The Avengers at the top of the American box office. Opening on a solid (if not spectacular) $55m, the movie was more or less an exact match for MIB 2’ $52m opening weekend a decade earlier.

There’s a fair bit riding on this movie, Will Smith hasn’t been on the big screen for 3 years, director Barry Sonnefeld hadn’t directed a film since 2006’ RV and of course the small matter of MIB 3′ $215m budget.

Around the rest of the world MIB 3 did a little better, grossing an estimated $137m that brings its first weekend total to a respectable $187m. The Avengers has so far assembled $1.3 billion around the world, which is a figure MIB 3 won’t even get anywhere near.

The reviews have been mixed at best, but don’t expect a long reign at the top spot for the MIB as Prometheus rolls out into UK cinemas this Friday (June 8th for the US).
