Avengers Sets New US Opening Weekend Box Office Record
Having already amassed $440M at the international box office, Joss Whedon’s ultimate superhero movie broke box office records last weekend when it was released in the US.
Harry Potter’s final installment previously held the record, and just a little way behind it was The Dark Knight. The Avengers eclipsed them all and took a massive $207M opening weekend, this has exceeded the $150M insiders were predicting last week.
To put this into perspective, Iron Man 2 grossed a total of $623M worldwide by the time it finished its run. The 3D element is obviously a factor in The Avengers success but the movie has been out a little more than a week, and only a few days in the US.
Strong word of mouth, solid reviews and repeat business is going to keep adding to this impressive performance and the 12th member into the $1 Billion Club seems like a sure thing.
I’ve already seen it twice and I may well go again before it’s finished, Joss we are all so proud of you sir. Can we have a sequel now please?
