On Tuesday, We love movies [more than you] was invited to a presentation for the launch of Sony Movie Channel, and we went along to find out exactly what us geeks can expect.
Little over a year ago, Sony launched Sony Entertainment Channel, boasting a range of fantastic shows, including Hustle, The Tudors, and more recently Community (look out for this in our We Love TV section next week) . The channel has been an overwhelming success, and is now the 6th fastest growing channel in the UK.
The Sony Movie Channel looks set to be just as popular, and we can see why. Launching tonight on Sky Channel 323, with +1 on 324, the opening line up shows a great deal of promise for both the casual movie watcher, and the hardcore geeks out there. You can tune in 5.30pm for Woody Allen ’s crime caper comedy Manhattan Murder Mystery , followed by my personal favourite Tim Burton film, Big Fish, and then Alice is back in horror sequel Resident Evil; Extinction.
They are also running a great series of features, including Action Mondays, Movies at 10pm and a Friday night double feature, but probably most enticing to us is the monthly seasons, kicking off May with theThriller Season. This is open to endless possibilities, and whilst we can only speculate about what other seasons they may think up, we can confirm there will be a Woody Allen season, and a month of comedies over the summer is on its way .
Sony have a huge and impressive back catalogue, and whilst the channel won’t be solely their own movies, it does mean that there is very little chance of not finding something you like on there. Whilst this may be a bold step for Sony, it is a relatively safe one. With the crack down on internet piracy, and the ever increasing cinema prices (not to mention noisy teenagers) Sony are offering us another platform to see the movies we love. Granted, for new releases we will still have to make that trip to the cinema, but for the casual movie goer, why not get your own popcorn, get a few mates round and sit and watch the Friday night double feature. It certainly beats the crowds, overpriced tickets and the noise on offer at your local cinema, and it all comes from the comfort of your sofa.
Check out the Sony Movie Channel on Sky 323 and 324, tonight from 5.30pm. I know we’ll be tuning in.
