The Hunger Games Defies The Gods!

The Hunger Games continued it’s incredible run last weekend with $58.5m at the US box office. Bringing its total worldwide takings up to $362m in under two weeks. There will naturally be an ongoing drop off for the remainder of it’s theatrical run, but reaching the $1 billion mark is still within its grasp. Not even Zeus himself (or Liam Neeson) could knock The Hunger Games off the top spot at this rate.

Wrath of the Titans arrives just two years after the messy Clash of the Titans, the post converted charmless 3D remake managed to make $500m worldwide in 2010 but the follow up is unlikely to topple it. Opening on $33m in the US (half the amount of Clash) and a respectable $79m overseas it will do solid business but will it be enough to get a third one made?

Sadly the marketing team learned nothing from their previous campaign. Clash of the Titans has the tagline TITANS WILL CLASH, personally I think the title of the movie has already informed me that some form of clash between titans will occur. For the sequel they came up with FEEL THE WRATH, once again managing to work the title into the tagline this feel like a lazy after thought much like the post converted 3D!

There’s not many big movies out between now and The Avengers, so The Hunger Games could be sitting at the top spot for a while to come.
