Hunger Games Targets The Worldwide Box Office
Today sees the release of The Hunger Games, the highly anticipated adaptation is the first taste of the summer movie season. Over 24 million copies of the book has been sold and expectations are naturally sky high for the movie.
In America the movie will be on nearly 10,000 screens, which in itself is a record for a non sequel and whilst Lionsgate are a studio on the rise they are still very much a mid level studio.
Even the last Harry Potter didn’t get this kind of screen count, so all eyes are on the worldwide box office this weekend to see if the hype translates to a record breaking opening weekend.
Overall a $200 million seems the safe bet, easily $120 million will be from the American box office but with such a front loaded opening it’s likely to have a steep drop off for week two. Either way expect news of the sequel very soon after the weekend.
Check back over the weekend for a half hour podcast special on The Hunger Games, both myself and Jim make our predictions for it’s opening weekend, and of course go off topic.
