Once it was announced that Kenneth Branagh would not be returning to direct Thor 2 we were both rather sad. Branagh made a credible origins movie that in lesser hands could of been ridiculous. He brought his years of Shakespearian understanding and translated that to a superhero movie, and a fine job he did. Naturally this is also down to a good script and spot on casting.
Marvel Studios has finally confirmed that Patty Jenkins will be directing the anticipated sequel. Her previous movie was the Charlize Theron Oscar Winner ‘Monster’. Since her stunning debut she has directed episodes of Arrested Development, Entourage and the pilot for the US remake of The Killing. Her final pre Thor 2 work can be seen next in in a TV movie called Five, she directs 1 segment in an anthology of stories that deals with breast cancer. Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys and Demi Moore also direct stories in the ensemble project.
While it may seem like an odd choice at first, it certainly fits in with Marvel picking unusual directors to bring their movies to life. It will also mark the first Marvel movie to have a female director, it’s about time!
It’s a little unsettling that Thor 2 will be her second feature film, and her first in 8 years. We’re sure she’s up to the challenge.
